Managing SCA Exam Stress

As doctors, we have all faced numerous challenges, but one of the most daunting has to have been managing the stress of medical exams. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of material and the high stakes of our assessments. However, I’ve found some strategies that not only helped me cope but also improved my performance.

Putting Problems into Perspective

First and foremost, it’s crucial to put your problems into perspective. Failing an exam might seem catastrophic at the moment, but it’s not the end of the world. Planning and preparation are key to reducing the risk of being caught off guard. Break down your revision into manageable chunks and focus on the topic at hand, rather than the entire syllabus. If you hit a mental block, move on to another topic and return to the tricky one later. This way, you keep your momentum and avoid getting stuck.

The Power of Focus

When revising, immerse yourself fully in the current topic. It can be tempting to think about the myriads of subjects you still need to cover, but this will only heighten your anxiety. Focus on what you are doing now. If you’re stuck, take a break and come back with a fresh mind. Seeking help from peers, tutors, or student support can also provide new perspectives and solutions.

Managing Caffeine Intake

As someone who once relied heavily on caffeine, I learned the hard way that energy drinks and excessive coffee can be detrimental. Limit your caffeine intake to two cups a day and avoid trying new caffeinated products right before an exam. Caffeine kicks in within 5-10 minutes and peaks about an hour after consumption, so time it wisely to avoid jitteriness during your assessments.

Pre-Exam Routine

Having a clear plan for the hours leading up to your exam can significantly reduce stress. Engage in activities that help you relax and maintain perspective. Reflect on past achievements to remind yourself that this exam is just one of many challenges you’ve successfully navigated. Meditate, contemplate, pray or do deep breathing exercises to help calm your nerves and ready you for the exam.

Sleep & Rest

Eating well and getting sufficient sleep are non-negotiables; your body and brain need fuel and rest to function optimally. Taking planned breaks from study is crucial to avoid burnout and maintain productivity.

Setting Realistic Goals

Setting achievable goals is another effective strategy. Whether you have weeks, days, or just hours before your exam, realistic goals help put everything into perspective and maximize productivity without the risk of burnout. Accept your situation, work within your limits, and celebrate small victories along the way.

The Importance of Social Support

Don’t go it alone. Study groups can enhance learning and provide emotional support. Revising with peers not only helps you absorb information better but also boosts confidence and autonomy. Ensure your SCA practice group is diverse in skillset and background to ensure the feedback you get is more comprehensive. Weekly SCA practice is crucial to hone your skills

Finally, believe in yourself. When faced with challenges, remind yourself of how far you’ve come and what you’ve already achieved
